Ants by Japers Ants by Japers
This image was selected by National Geographic to be featured in their Daily Dozen for the 1st week of August 2010. [link]

I found these two carpenter ants locked in this interesting embrace.. I couldn’t tell if they were fighting, kissing, or passing food along, but I couldn’t resist capturing such a candid moment. I was only able to get two shots and luckily this one came out well. I hope everyone likes it as much as I do.

Oh goodness! They certainly aren't shy about PDAs now are they? XP I love their fuzzy little butts! By the way, you must have one FANTASTIC camera to be able to get such crystal clear picture of these tiny little lovebirds.

Thanks! :) They were passing food along my neighbors Red Passion Flower vines, so that's what they're standing on. And yes, indeed! I was very lucky! :D

I'd say they were probably passing food along. Ants don't have a reason to kiss. If they're from the same hive they're sisters. If they're from different hives they're enemies.

Agreed, I think either passing food along or fighting.. And from watching several others on the same vine, I think passing food along would be the correct assumption. Though it's sweeter to think they're kissing. ;)

Amazing shot, you were so lucky to capture it, and it came out so clear and detailed!

I read somewhere that the brain of an ant has just a fraction of the number of neurons of a human brain. But, the combined brains of all the ants in an entire colony, has just about the same number of neurons as the human brain! And ants act a lot like humans, with their structured working system, aphid farming, even going to war with rival colonies XD
